Judicial Appointment Leak Investigation – Wilson Requested

Judicial Appointment Leak Investigation - Wilson Requested

Former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould is raising voice over the investigation of leaked judicial appointment process information among SNC-Lavalin Scandal to the Supreme Court.

Reportedly, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2017 was asking for the recommendation of Wilson-Raybould to make Manitoba Judge Glenn Joyal chief justice of Supreme Court.

Judicial appointments are extremely confidential. Names and reason for passing a particular candidate are never disclosed.

Wilson-Raybould said that leaks have put judicial appointments in danger and that’s why it should be investigated thoroughly.

She said, “I do feel compelled to say that I have not — as some have suggested — been the source of any of these stories, nor have I ever authorized any person to speak on my behalf.”

Judicial Appointment Leak Probe Request:

On Wednesday, Conservative Deputy Leader Lisa Raitt also asked for the proper probe.

Raitt has made the request to investigate the case through the Commissioner Office of Canada for Federal Judicial Affairs. For the first time ever, a parliamentarian has made such request.

Additionally, she said that Lawyers and judges applying for the judicial appointments must be assured that their applications aren’t being used for political purposes.

Attorney General David Lametti is also concerned but didn’t indicate his will for investigation.

Federal Judicial Affairs Commissioner Mark Giroux said that leaks leave him “deeply concerned and troubled.”

As a reply to Raitt’s request, he said, “My office is the intermediary between the judiciary and the executive, and the Judges Act does not provide me with any investigatory power … I am therefore not in a position to accede to your request to investigate.”

Wilson-Raybould is really concerned about the Trudeau’s recommendation for Joyal. According to Wilson, Joyal is very conservative. He is not committed to protecting the Charter of Rights and freedom.

This report is raising questions to Trudeau and his officials’ claim. They said that Wilson-Raybould’s removal from her position is just the call of time. It was required due to the former Liberal Cabinet member Scott Brison’s departure, just to fill his position.

Trudeau has said repeatedly that if Brison didn’t leave then Wilson-Raybould will be still Attorney General.
