Canada Funding Program – Trudeau Blames Ford Government For Infrastructure Delay

Canada Funding Program - Trudeau Blames Ford Government For Infrastructure Delay

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says that the federal government is ready to give money to Ontario municipalities. But, the provincial government is holding up vital infrastructure funds. Trudeau is blaming the Ontario government for not processing Canada funding program.

In Kitchener, PM announced federal funding for a new tech innovation corridor for Toronto, Ottawa & Waterloo region.

Trudeau said, “We have a large amount of money ready to be invested in tangible infrastructure projects like public transit, and the provincial government under Doug Ford does not want to partner with us to make those investments.”

He also said, “Under the previous Ontario government, the money was flowing well. Unfortunately, the current Conservative government in Ontario has not approved a single infrastructure project with the federal government over the past year”.

Previous Liberal government & the federal government signed a joint agreement to provide $180 million for four spendings. These spending areas are as follows:

  • Rural and northern infrastructure.
  • Culture and recreation.
  • Green initiatives.
  • Transportation.

Until now, Rural and northern funding process were done on 12th March & transportation funding was completely processed on 26th March.

Expectedly, the other two funding application process will open later this year.

Private Conversation On Canada Funding Program:

The federal government had a private conversation with the provincial government about process opening so municipalities can start applying for funding as a part of Investing in Canada Infrastructure program.

Trudeau says if the delays continue then the province will miss this summer’s construction season.

Infrastructure Minister Monte McNaughton said the government began to review all spending commitments after taking office last summer.

He said, “We understand the federal government has an election to worry about, but we don’t answer to the Justin Trudeau re-election campaign.”

“We’ve been patient with the Doug Ford government. We’ve been highlighting this behind closed doors and privately to them that they really need to flow this money. I am now saying it very publicly that the provincial government in Ontario is letting down Ontarians”,  said Trudeau.

In addition, he said, “The kinds of politics they seem to be playing of not wanting to make an announcement with a federal Liberal government is not worthy of a commitment to support the people of Ontario.”

Ontario transportation ministry says that the province is committed to delivering a transport plant for southwestern by this fall.

Last week, Doug Ford said, “There has to be the responsibility with the federal government. Last time I checked, they have a lot of members where these subways are going.”
