Satellite Images Showed Activity At Main North Korea Nuclear Site

US researchers have detected activity at Main North Korea nuclear site. It hints at the reprocessing of radioactive material into bomb fuel since summit collapsed with Washington.

Satellite images from last week show fresh movements at the main North Korea nuclear site. It might be a result of an abruptly ended agreement between US president Trump & North Korea leader Kim Jong-Un. The agreement was on Pyongyang’s nuclear programme.

According to a report of Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies, satellite imagery of North Korea’s Yongbyon nuclear site from April 12 showed five specialized railcars near its Uranium Enrichment Facility and Radiochemistry Laboratory.

This movement indicated the transfer of radioactive material.

The current activity, along with their configurations, does not rule out their possible involvement in such activity, either before or after a reprocessing campaign.”

The US State Department didn’t comment on intelligence matter. But US experts thought the movements could possibly be related to reprocessing, they were doubtful it was significant nuclear activity.

A North Korea expert said, if reprocessing was taking place, it would be significant given the US-North Korean talks in the past year and the failure to reach an agreement on the future of Yongbyon in Hanoi.

Trump & Kim met two times & Trump persuades him to abandon a nuclear weapons program that threatens the United States. But, the progress in this regard is minimal.

Notably, Trump rejected partial denuclearization steps offered by Kim including an offer to dismantle Yongbyon.

Afterwards, Trump proposed a “big deal” which will lift up the sanctions on North Korea. But only if it hands over all its nuclear weapons and fissile material to the US. Consequently, Hanoi talks collapsed.

Kim Jong Un has maintained a freeze in missile and nuclear tests since 2017. But, the nation has continued to produce fissile material that can be processed for use in bombs.

North Korean leader said he would wait “till the end of this year” for the United States to decide to be more flexible.

Trump & Mike Pompeo refused Kim’s demand. Pompeo says Kim should keep his promise to give up his nuclear weapons before then.

According to Centre for International Security & Cooperation’s study, North Korea had continued to produce bomb fuel in 2018 and may have produced enough in the past year to add as many as seven nuclear weapons to its arsenal.

The estimated size of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal is somewhere between 20 and 60 warheads.
