Donald Trump Ordered Officials To Introduce New & Tougher US Asylum Rules

On Monday, the US President Donald Trump directed official to impose tougher US asylum rules. It includes barring of illegal migrants and application fee for asylum.

Migrants will have to face bar from entering the country until refugee claim approves. Also, asylum seekers have to pay an application fee for seeking asylum. However, the application was free of cost earlier.

All these moves of Trump are his efforts to decline the increasing migrants in the US southern border. Many of those migrants seek asylum in the US. Thus, the President is trying to stop the migrants from entering the country by new US asylum rules. Trump’s officials have been blaming the US laws protecting asylum seekers for encouraging fraudulent claims.

However, immigrant advocates say that Trump’s effort will harm legit asylum seekers.

Notably, Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum on Monday. It directs the Justice Department & Department of Homeland Security to introduce a slew of new regulations tightening asylum policy. It includes the aforementioned asylum application fee. For some asylum seekers, even a small fee could be unassailable.

A former US Citizenship and Immigration Services officer, Victoria Neilson said, “The majority of people coming to the United States seeking asylum are coming with little more than the shirts on their back.”

In Addition, Trump also ordered his officials to introduce such a regulation that would ensure adjudication of asylum claims within six months in immigration court. However, the Justice Department already finishes the asylum cases in 6 months as directed by US law. But, about 800,000 cases are in backlog. Thus asylum claims take many years for the conclusion.

Not just that, the US President also ordered to prepare another regulation which could disqualify illegally entered asylum seekers to obtain a work permit until the claim is pending. At the present time, both illegal and legal asylum seekers have permission to work before any decision.

Officials say that extensively growing number of migrants is pushing resources to the breaking point. In March, the US Customs and Border Protection Officials encountered around 100,000 people at US Mexico border. It was the highest number in a decade.

The new memorandum is Trump’s latest effort to stop the protection of the asylum. Other policy steps have to face the challenges in federal court.
