On Friday, Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “Moves that a province may or may not make will have no bearing on the approval process for important projects like the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.” According to him, provincial fighting against the federal carbon tax won’t affect the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion. Its expansion is necessary for climate change prevention.
He says that the government cannot ignore climate change. According to him, the easiest way to find against it is a carbon tax.
Trudeau said carbon tax will prove quite affordable to Canadians. Along with that, tax incentives will help average families.
The government implied the federal tax to those provinces which do not have its own carbon levy. It includes provinces such as Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba and New Brunswick.
Alberta premier Jason Kenney promised to kill provincial carbon tax in Alberta. He will do so as the first order of his new United conservative government.
He is also willing to fight against the Trudeau’s government move of replacing provincial levy with the federal one. Since now there is no confirmation on replacing the provincial carbon levy with federal carbon tax.
At present, the government only implied this for provinces which are not implying its own provincial levy.
“There are many discussions still to have on this. What we are going to ensure is that nowhere across the country will it be free to pollute,” Trudeau said about implying federal tax on Alberta.
Christine Myatt said, “We look forward to approval of the Trans Mountain expansion project and fully expect the federal government to do everything in its power to see that this pipeline gets built.”

A week ago, the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal ruled the federal carbon tax without the provincial carbon levy constitutional.
Not only Alberta but Ontario and Saskatchewan are also challenging the decision. Expectedly, the bill will introduce on 21st May.
Henceforth, Trudeau’s cabinet is trying to make a decision as soon as possible. Hopefully, it will finalize the decision next month. It will discuss whether to approve the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion or not.
The expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline will triple the capacity of oil shipped from Alberta to the west coast.
Further, Trudeau said, “We’ve made sure that the average family is actually better off with the climate action incentive we return to them at tax time than they would be paying as an extra price on pollution.”
“Fighting climate change while making it affordable for Canadians is at the heart of how we’re going to move forward,” he added.
