Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will sign an international pledge on Wednesday in Paris. The pledge aims at getting governments and social media companies working together to curb the spread of violent and extremist content online. He will take part in the Christchurch call summit along with many other leaders.
Tomorrow, Trudeau is going to attend the Christchurch Call summit in Paris. New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern will co-chair the meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Expectedly, Ardern will cite the massacre of 51 Muslim worshippers in two NZ mosques in March. She pushes for a sweeping agreement to combat terrorist content disseminated on social media.
Last week, Trudeau talked about his fear that social media platforms increasingly are being weaponised “as tools to incite, publish and broadcast extremist violence and hatred.”
He called for “a coordinated global response” to tackle the problem. The details of the non-binding pledge up for approval are sketchy yet. However, it will call on social media firms to examine software that directs users to violent content and asks them to share more data with government authorities to find and eliminate violent, extremist material.

The Christchurch call summit came after drastic gun attacks on two Christchurch mosques in March.
Reportedly, all the leaders of Norway, Indonesia, UK, Ireland, Senegal, and the president of the European Commission, will also be in Paris. Not just that, high-level Facebook, Twitter, Google and Microsoft officials will also attend the summit. All will endorse the agreement as expected.
The US has been reluctant to regulate the internet due to concerns about limiting freedom of speech. Thus the US will not attend the summit and not even sign the pledge.
The UK PM Theresa May may call on governments and social media companies to work together to block hateful content.
Ardern said controlling amplification of hate online is not curbing expression freedom.
8 Chan and 4 Chan are not going to take part in the summit.
Also, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will absent in this Christchurch call summit. The Facebook vice president will take place on behalf of the tech giant.
Trudeau also will speak about encouraging trust in the online world at VivaTech. It is an annual technology conference that focuses on start-ups and innovation.
