Quebec reports 142 new COVID-19 cases, highest single-day increase since mid-June

MONTREAL — Quebec is reporting 142 new cases of COVID-19 — the largest single-day increase in more than one month.

The province has now reported a total of 57,001 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.

Public health authorities announced ten more deaths today attributed to the novel coronavirus, nine of which occurred in the past 24 hours while one occurred before July 8, for a total of 5,646.

The rise in cases comes as the province tries to bolster its testing capacity in Montreal after a series of COVID outbreaks at bars in the city.

Authorities last weekend asked anyone who had gone to a Montreal-area bar since July 1 to get tested.

Quebec says it conducted 12,887 COVID-19 tests Tuesday, the last day for which data is available.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 16, 2020.
