SIU trying to identify 73-year-old man killed in police-involved shooting

Ontario’s police watchdog says it’s trying to identify a 73-year-old man who died in a police-involved shooting in cottage country yesterday.

The Special Investigations Unit says it happened after the man visited a grocery store in Minden, Ont., and allegedly began assaulting people.

They say officers with the Ontario Provincial Police followed him home, at which point shots were fired and the man was killed.

The SIU says the man has still not been identified as investigators try to track down his next-of-kin.

It says a search of the scene turned up a semi-automatic rifle as well as a pistol.

The SIU is automatically called in to investigate incidents involving police in which someone is killed, injured or accused of sexual assault.
