NORTHUMBERLAND – An ad hoc committee is being formed in Northumberland County to explore alternatives to using Roundup to manage weeds around the guide rails on county roads.
During its recent meeting, county councillors heard from three presenters about the need for safely managing vegetation growth.
Northumberland County council resolved to strike an ad hoc committee that will explore and advise of safe, cost-effective ways to address vegetation management near guide rails on county roads.
The vegetation management advisory committee will report to county council through the public works committee and will hold its first meeting in January 2021.
The committee will include two appointed council members and one representative from each of the following stakeholder groups:
• Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge Health Unit
• Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks
• Blue Dot Movement
• Willow Beach Field Naturalists
• Agricultural community
• County public works staff
• County forest staff.
Council heard from a local resident, a representative of the David Suzuki Foundation and a volunteer from Blue Dot Northumberland about the issues related to Roundup use.
