North American stock markets fall in late-morning trading; loonie is down

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the technology sector, while U.S. stock markets were also lower.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 19.41 points at 16,165.13.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 144.61 points at 27,672.29. The S&P 500 index was down 23.35 points at 3,357.45, while the Nasdaq composite was down 142.98 points at 11,183.53.
The Canadian dollar traded for 75.14 cents US compared with 75.23 cents US on Thursday.
The November crude contract was down US$1.27 at US$37.45 per barrel and the November natural gas contract was down three cents at US$2.50 per mmBTU.
The December gold contract was down US$5.50 at US$1,910.80 an ounce and the December copper contract was up 10 cents at US$2.97 a pound.
