Quebec reports 969 new cases of COVID-19 as death toll linked to virus rises by 28

MONTREAL — Quebec is reporting 969 new cases of COVID-19 and eight deaths attributed to the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

Health authorities said today another 22 deaths newly linked to the virus occurred at earlier dates while two deaths previously attributed to COVID-19 were unrelated.

Hospitalizations rose by five compared with the prior day, for a total of 493, and 83 patients are in intensive care, a rise of three.

The province has reported a total of 89,963 cases of COVID-19 and 6,005 deaths linked to the virus.

Quebec’s public health institute said Wednesday nearly 30 per cent of all COVID-19 cases reported in the province during the virus’s first wave involved health workers.

The institute said 3,581 health-care workers had confirmed cases of COVID-19 between March 1 and June 14 — an infection rate 10 times that of the wider public. Eleven workers died.
