Pakistan cricket legend Shahid Afridi has made the staggering insinuation that the ICC is conspiring to ensure India wins their way through to the T20 World Cup semi-finals. Eyebrows were raised when India’s game with Bangladesh was swiftly resumed after a rain delay which seemed to leave the outfield in a similar state to that of the MCG during Australia’s abandoned match with England last Friday night.
Afridi, who is currently a member of Pakistan’s parliament, took to Twitter to voice his concerns about the ICC’s alleged bias towards India. He tweeted: “I have been saying this for years that @ICC is inclined towards @BCCI . Now they want to ensure India makes semis at any cost!”
Afridi’s claims have since been backed up by other members of Pakistan’s cricket community. Javed Miandad, another Pakistani cricket great, said: “The ICC must come clean on why it is hell-bent on aiding and abetting India all the time.” Imran Khan, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, also waded into the controversy, tweeting: “I agree with Shahid Afridi. The ICC’s treatment of Pakistan has always been biased and unfair.”
The ICC has yet to respond to Afridi’s allegations, but they are sure to cause consternation among cricket fans around the world. If proven true, they would cast serious doubt on the integrity of the sport’s governing body.
