Richmond schools settling into new normal

Hundreds of Richmond students are participating remotely during the back-to-school season this year.

Superintendent Scott Robinson said the district added large group seminars to cover elementary students’ core subjects—and these have proven to be more popular than anticipated. More than 500 students wanted to attend webinar classes, so the school district had to extend its license to allow 1,000 participants to access webinars synchronously. The classes can also be accessed after they happen.

“The growing pains are to be expected,” Robinson said during this week’s Richmond COVID-19 Community Task Force meeting. “We’re all settling into a solid routine and happy to have our kids back.”

And students who are learning in-person are also settling in, said Robinson. Hand washing is part of a regular routine, and parents and staff are taking the daily health assessment very seriously.

“The vast majority are wearing masks,” he added.
