Canadian Armed Forces Members Linked To Hate Groups

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces linked to six hate groups since 2013. This issue is damaging the image of the military.

According to the Military Police Criminal Intelligence Section, 16 members of armed forces and reserves had been associated with the hate group. The members were active in La Meute, III%, Atomwaffen Division, Proud Boys, Soldiers of Odin and Hammerskins Nation.

All of the groups identified to fall under the far-right spectrum of political discourse and beliefs, specifically anti-Islam and/or white supremacy.

The report excreted out due to developing concerns regarding right-wing extremism. The military launched investigations into a number of soldiers tied to such racist groups.

Further, the report revealed the groups are paramilitary in nature. They conduct weapon training and many other activities as of military grounds.

The report said, “Drawing on their training and deployment experience, current and former military members find that their skills are valuable by these groups. Further, they provide structure to these organizations, therefore, affording them the ability to gain positions of leadership.”

However, only 0.1% of the total Canadian Armed Forces population has links with such hate and racist groups.

Collectively, A small number of Canadian Armed Forces members belongs to hate groups and/or involved in possible hate-motivated incidents. This negligible number do not pose any significant threat to the CAF/DND.

Chair of Canadian Anti-Hate Network, Bernie Farber has trouble with the military did not appear to view the numbers as alarming. He said, “I would tell them that one is a significant threat. Their service should end immediately.”

Further, Farber would be asking his board of directors to send a letter to Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan expressing deep concerns regarding report.

The document obtained under the Access to Information Act. For the first time, it reported on Montreal Radio Station 98.5 FM by Fabrice de Pierrebourg.

Since January 2013, 53 members singled out, however, 30 remained in the military.

Jessica Lamirande said, “The analysis helped inform the Provost Marshal of various threats in order to ensure the best possible use of the available police resources to protect the institution.”

She said, “Every single CAF member has a responsibility to act and report any instance of discriminatory conduct. Any complaint that is submitted is promptly reviewed and addressed.”
