Netflix/Canadian Film Centre announce four series for development initiative

TORONTO — The Canadian Film Centre and Netflix have announced four projects in the TV series portion of their inaugural Project Development Accelerator initiative.

The three-month program, which announced its film selections in May, offers advanced project development and workshopping support for creators.

The four TV series, chosen from more than 100 applications, include “Alter Boys” from Winnipeg-based Indigiqueer writer/creator Jonathan Lawrence.

A news release says the half-hour drama “follows a group of young men who are thrust into furtive practices of conversion therapy in an isolated camp veiled by the woods.”

Jennifer Holness and Sudz Sutherland are the creators/writers of the half-hour comedy/drama “#RELATIONSHIPGOALS,” which features “three generations of Black girl magic — all under the same roof, and all with strong opinions.”

Holness’s previous credits include creating the TV series “Shoot the Messenger,” while Sutherland’s other work includes directing the features “Home Again” and “Love, Sex and Eating the Bones.”

In the one-hour sci-fi action drama “The Ageless” by Faisal Lutchmedial, an elderly Second World War vet is “transformed by an age-reversal experiment” and “sets out to dismantle a fascist cult of the eternally young.”

And the one-hour comedy/drama “girl” from Toronto-based writer/director Pat Mills centres on Taylor, who gets “mistaken” for a girl on the first day of high school and doesn’t correct anyone.

The individually tailored development initiative runs from September to November and will include feedback from Netflix executives and a range of industry professionals.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 8, 2020.
