S&P/TSX composite up in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Gains in the materials and industrial sectors helped power Canada’s main stock index higher in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 60.50 points at 16,085.00.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 41.37 points at 26,693.34. The S&P 500 index was up 3.24 points at 3,218.81, while the Nasdaq composite was up 8.28 points at 10,482.11.

The Canadian dollar traded for 73.65 cents US compared with 73.84 cents on Thursday.

The September crude contract was down 28 cents at US$40.65 per barrel and the August natural gas contract was up nearly two cents at US$1.74 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was up US$10.30 at US$1,810.60 an ounce and the September copper contract was up nearly a penny at US$2.91 a pound.
