Brunei, a small nation on the island of Borneo implied new strict Islamic laws known as Sharia law. Under this law, gay couples will be stoned to death whereas lesbians have to go through caning. Let’s discuss the new Sharia laws and sex laws of Brunei and its international criticism.
Sharia Law:
Sharia is Islam’s legal system which is an act of conduct of Muslims’ including devotional traditions and donations. this law teaches Muslim’s to live theirs according to Islamic rules. These laws are extremely strict.
It’s quite questionable how can somebody force other people to offer prayers. It’s solely a person’s will whether he or she wants to indulge in devotional traditions or not.
Brunei Prime minister Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah said, “I want to see Islamic teachings in this country grow stronger.”
In 2014, Brunei first introduced Sharia law with the Common law also. Moreover, at that time, Hassanal Bolkiah indicated the full enforcement of Sharia law.
Point to be noted, Homosexuality was already illegal in Brunei and punishable for up to 10 years
Punishments under Sharia Law:
Sharia laws include drastically cruel punishments for different offences. This includes death stoning for gay sex and caning or 10-year jail for lesbian sex.
However, these laws will only imply if accuser confesses or the offence has been witnessed by 4 people.
Amputation of limbs for thieves is also part of this new law. Public flogging for abortion. Surprisingly, the law also see considers teaching children below 18 years about any other religions except Islam as an offence.
Additionally, capital punishment or execution for robbery, rape, sodomy, adultery and insult of Prophet Mohammad is also applicable.
Notably, all these laws are strictly applicable to Muslims only. However, some of these laws are also applicable to non-Muslims of Brunei.
Also, convicts who haven’t hit puberty yet will undergo whipping.
Global Condemnation:
TV Host Ellen DeGeneres and Hollywood actor George Clooney have called for the Boycott of Luxury hotels owned by Hassanal Bolkiah.
Now, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s honorary degree awarded by the University Of Aberdeen, UK is also under review.
Some people of Brunei are under extreme fear whereas some say that these laws will not be implied harshly. People say that being a common man they can’t oppose these Sharia laws.
