China second time sentenced a Canadian citizen for drug smuggling. This new sentence has increased the tension between the two countries. Canada & China was already facing issues over the arrest of Huawei executive. This is for the second time that China death sentence Canadian.
A Chinese court announced death sentenced for the Canadian citizen for producing & trafficking a large amount of methamphetamine.
On Tuesday, Jiangmen Intermediate People’s Court in Guandong province issued a statement. According to this statement, a total of 11 people were sentenced at the hearing, including one American and four Mexican citizens.
Only two received the death penalty. One was Canadian citizen name translated to Fan Wei. Another who received the death penalty is a Chinese national Wu Ziping.
As per the Court’s statement, the harsher sentence was due to their helping role in trafficking operation in March 2012. Both were facing accusations of trafficking 139 pounds/63kg methamphetamines.
However, Mexican & American citizens received either life imprisonment or a suspended death sentence. Notably, all defendants could appeal a verdict within 10 days.

Recalling the past, China previously death sentenced a Canadian national Robert Lloyd Schellenberg in January also. It plunged the relationship between the two nations.
Not just that, two other Canadians remained on detention in China on suspicion of espionage. The two men were ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig & businessman Michael Spavor.
In contrast with, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called these detentions arbitrary. Thus, he also called for the immediate release of both Spavor & Korvig.
In China, All the detentions and sentences took place after the arrest of the chief financial officer of Chinese tech giant Huawei, Meng Wanzhou. Therefore, Canada is interpreting these entire sentence & detention cases as a retaliatory act instead of lawful doings.
On 1st December 2018, Canada arrested Meng on behalf of the US in Vancouver. The United States charged him of evading Iran sanctions.
Further, Meng is currently under house arrest in Vancouver. He is also facing extradition to the US.
In March, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said, “Both Canada and the US abused their bilateral extradition treaty and took forced actions on a Chinese citizen. This severely infringed a Chinese citizen’s legitimate rights.”
