Congress to Contempt Attorney General William Barr

Congress to Contempt Attorney General William Barr

US Attorney General William Barr headed to a showdown with Congress Democrats. Lawmakers will contempt Barr if he failed to show full Mueller’s report instead of a redacted version.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler ordered to produce a full report and all underlying shreds of evidence of the investigation. Barr missed his initial deadline to do so last week.

Mueller’s report didn’t find Trump convict but didn’t even exonerate him. However, Trump declared himself exonerated by his own. William Barr is also protecting Trump by not revealing actual conclusions of the report. He is clearing all criminal obstructions and misconducts of Trump by misinterpreting the report. Some Democrats want Barr to resign asap.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi charged attorney of lying to Congress and called it a crime.

Nadler put Barr on notice that if the Justice Department doesn’t comply with a subpoena then “the committee will move to contempt proceedings and seek further legal recourse”. The Justice Department didn’t even pay heed to it and carry on to not comment on the letter.

A Democrat on Nadler’s panel, representative David Cicilline said, “If Mr Barr agrees to turn over what we’ve requested in a reasonable way, no one on the committee is interested in moving forward.”

Republicans, as usual, rejected his effort as political theatre. Barr should keep in mind that ignoring subpoena may not affect Republicans but will surely affect him. While protecting Trump may be he is signing off from his actual duty. The contempt citation could lead to a civil court case against him. If he thinks Trump will save him then why not the one culprit will save the other for sure.

It’s not the first time that William ignored orders on subpoenas. Initially, he also missed the subpoena deadline of turning Mueller material. Not just that, Trump and his administration ordered everyone not to respond to subpoena and hearings.

On Thursday, William Barr also skipped a hearing before Nadler’s Committee.
