Mississauga Independence – Brampton & Caledon Reaction

Mississauga Independence - Brampton & Caledon Reaction

Bonnie Crombie the Mississauga Mayor has asked for the separation from the Peel region. The Mayor wants the city to stand alone by the Mississauga Independence. Peel region consists of three municipal Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga.

Mississauga is providing a total of 59% to the development of the Peel region. Mayor Crombie is saying that this is the wastage of the capitals and investments as it is helping other cities to grow.

According to her, the wealth of the Mississauga should be used for the enhancements of the city itself alone instead of helping other cities.

Bonnie Crombie tweeted, “Analysis shows we send $85 M to the Region to fund the growth of other cities, this is not fair to residents and businesses.”

On Wednesday, she also tweeted about the acceptance of her proposal for the legislation of Mississauga independence.

Mayor said that the government will hold a community meeting to know about the public opinions before finalizing the decision.

Mississauga Independence- Brampton Reaction:

On the contrary to all these above-mentioned statements and movements, the Brampton mayor has a lot to say.

Brampton Mayor Patric Brown turns down the implication of Mississauga helping Brampton and Caledon’s growth. While speaking to CP24, He said, “The reality is that for years Brampton has subsidized infrastructure in Mississauga.” He continued statement by saying that, “If you look at the water treatment plant, that was built with Brampton taxpayer dollars so obviously if there was a separation there would be a large bill for Mississauga to pay.”

Caledon Reaction:

Caledon Mayor Allan Thompson stated that the Mississauga separation will not cause any harm to the Peel region. He also said that this separation and the decision of standing alone is not feasibly possible.

As we all know, The Former Mayor Hazel McCallion also tries to make Mississauga independent but failed due to the lack of province support.

During an interview with CBC Toronto, Mayor Crombie said, “We see cities like Windsor, London, Guelph, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay… they’re single-tier, they’re independent. Why shouldn’t Mississauga have the ability to control our own destiny as well?”

Now let’s see if Mississauga will be able to be independent or not. Don’t forget to tell us your opinions regarding this issue in the comments sections below.
