Mexico Cracks Down After Trump Threat - Migrants Suffering in Overflowed Camps

Mexico is not keeping its promise of better treatment for Central American migrants. They have left hundreds stranded in unsanitary camps near its southern border.

In December, Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador promised more humane treatment for Central American migrants. However, in January his government issues many year-long humanitarian visas. This visa helps migrant to access the jobs in the US.

Mexico ceased the liberal visa policy after receiving criticism from US President Donald Trump.

Expectedly, Trump will limit trade with Mexico if it didn’t slow immigration.

An unreleased National Migration Institute data showed that in March, it detained 12,746 undocumented migrants for registration. These detentions are way more than as compared to January and February.

Earlier this month, INM said it remained open to issuing humanitarian visas in Chiapas, with priority given to women, children and the elderly.

After INM closed its main office in Chiapas, the migrants have to travel extra miles to reach Mapastepec office in a hope of humanitarian visas.

Many men, woman and children are residing inside the stadium. Migration officers have registered their identities whereas they ignored the groups camped over roads. They are just living on scan handouts from locals.

INM Commissioner Tonatiuh Guillen Lopez said due to the influx of migrants in Chiapas his agency is working strictly in southern Mexico. He denied his doing under US pressure.

Humanitarian Setback:

INM officials stated that the closure took place due to the enraged migrants wanting storming results.

Whereas, Rights groups and migrants contradict this.

Migrants have to wait a month longer as officials have paused the registration process at the stadium in Mapastepec.

Even a registered person has no clue of getting a humanitarian visa.

INM said it would not issue any humanitarian visa in Mapastepec but migrants can request a 7-day visit permit to southern states of Mexico. However, it will not allow them to travel the north side.

Migrants have to wait as they can’t roam here and there in their caravans with uncertainty. All these migrants are feasible prey to thieves and smugglers. They also suffer extortion by police.

Don’t when all this will come to an end positively. When the sufferings of migrants would end?
