Nuclear Power Share Between US & Saudi Arabia – Part 810 Authorizations

Nuclear Power Share Between US & Saudi Arabia - Part 810 Authorizations

On Wednesday, US Energy Secretary Rick Perry approved 6 secret authorizations to lend Saudi Arabia its Nuclear power technology and service by companies.

Trump administration has silently followed a wider deal which will build two new nuclear power plants. Not just that, the US will share its nuclear power technology with Saudi Arabia.

Perry’s approval is an agreement which allows the preliminary work before any nuclear power deal but not the ship equipment. It is also known as Part 810 authorization.

National Nuclear Security Administration of the Energy Department said that the companies have requested to keep the approvals secret.

Recalling, the Energy Department had allowed the public to read 810 authorizations in the headquarters. In documents, the NNSA said, “In this case, each of the companies which received a specific authorization for (Saudi Arabia) have provided us written request that their authorization is withheld from public release.”

Many US lawmakers worrying about the nuclear arms race in the Middle East by sharing the nuclear technique with Saudi Arabia.

Last year, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad-Bin-Salman has told CBS that Saudi will also create the nuclear weapons if Iran did. The Kingdom sometimes opposed the US standards which were restraining the making of essential nuclear weapon material.

Primarily, these standards were stalling the fulfillment and reprocessing of Uranium and the spent fuel.

Nuclear Power Share – Worrisome Congress:

Last October, an US-based journalist Jamal Khagoshi was killed in Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Due to this, Congress has second thoughts to share nuclear power with Saudi Arabia. All Part 810 authorizations were made after November 2017. But, whether they were made after Khashoggi’s death or not is still ambiguous.

On Wednesday, A Democrat Representative Brad Sherman called State Secretary Mike Pompeo during a congressional hearing to unveil the name of companies approved in the April mid. Brad Sherman also said that the Trump administration tried bypassing Congress by sharing nuclear power with Saudi Arabia.

Pompeo said that the administration trying to make sure that the sharing and widening nuclear power doesn’t cause any harm.

Reportedly, the House of Democrats accused that the White House aides ignored the warnings as they would have thought of breaking laws just because they have worked with the US officials in an IP3 International Group. The group worked on a multi-billion plan of making nuclear reactors in the middle including Saudi Arabia as well.

Notably, IP3 didn’t respond to whether it is one of the Part 810 authorizations.

On Wednesday, GAO said that the Government Accountability Office and the Investigate arm of Congress have accepted that request of investing Administration’s talk with Saudi Arabia regarding nuclear power sharing.  A Democrat, a Republican and Senator Marco Rubio made this request.
