Amazon Faces Backlash For Toilet Seats & Rugs With Hindu God Images

On Thursday, Amazon.com faced a social media backlash in India. It was because toilet seat covers & other items with images of Hindu gods were spotted on the US retailer’s website. People are encouraging the boycott of Amazon. #BoycottAmazon has become the country’s top trending topic on Twitter.

Thousands of Twitter users backed the call for the boycott. They are doing so with tagging Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj. Henceforth, all are urging her to take action against the world’s biggest online retailer.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It is quite similar to an incident in 2017. That time, Washington-based company spotted selling doormats resembling India’s flag on its Canadian website.

To recall, Swaraj threatened the company’s employees of rescinding their visas if they were unable to remove doormats from its site.

Later on, Amazon said it was removing the products from its online store.

Further, the company said, “All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account.”

Some of the items were no longer available for purchase. Thus, it suggests that Amazon may have been withdrawing some of the items, as it did in 2017.

Sumit Kandel tweeted, “Until you hit these Hinduphobics Business hard they will keep on insulting your gods, your beliefs & your entire civilization.” His profile describes him as a film trade analyst.
